Over 500 jars of placenta capsules to date, lovingly prepared by me! Hundreds of women who have enjoyed the benefits of their placenta capsules. Balance, energy, packed with iron and replenishing hormones, moms want the blue glass jar to be bottomless! One mom looked forward to her next pregnancy in part because she knew she’d get more caps! And she did get pregnant again…with twins!
Be they carnivores, herbivores or omnivores, most mammals ingest their placenta(s) soon after birth. A few exceptions are marsupial mammals and some of those who dwell in the water. As well, camels are a rare exception…and you know how cranky they are!
For thousands of years the iron-rich placenta has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to enhance postpartum wellbeing. Studies have clearly shown the efficacy of ingesting the placenta (called placentophagia) to balance moods, decrease postpartum fatigue (and therefore the possibility of depression) and to increase energy, milk supply and the general feeling of wellbeing. I’m amazed at the different “personalities” and the varied responses to processing that each placenta presents.
I am one of the first Bay Area Placenta Encapsulation Specialists trained through Placenta Benefits Info.. The training incorporates different modules of study and testing. We are trained in and required to follow specific OSHA standards regarding sterilization procedures, and must study and pass the State Food Handlers’ Safety test each year. I also trained in sterile technique and took Bloodborne Pathogens training while working as an EMT in a trauma center in Illinois.
I will process your placenta and provide valuable capsules and/or tincture that you may begin taking as soon as possible to aid in your postpartum recovery. You can choose one of two methods of preparation (or a combination of these two).
The more common Traditional Chinese Medicine process, involves steaming, dehydrating and grinding the placenta into a powder that I put into vegetarian capsules. Ginger and Myrrh are added to the water and infused through the maternal side of the placenta in the steaming process. The ginger and myrrh add warming and tonifying support. TCM believes birth leaves an open/cool space and therefore uses steaming as a way of adding warm Yang energy.
The Raw method is commonly used for those who adhere to a raw diet for all of their foods. Many who eat a raw diet believe that heat destroys some of the vital enzymes in food. If the raw method is chosen placenta preparation is restricted to temperatures below 118 degrees F. In the case of placenta, some argue that the Raw method also yields a medicine with more hormones and nutrients than the TCM method. This version of processing involves preparing the raw placenta and moving straight to dehydrating.
You may choose half & half TCM and Raw processing for an additional fee. You will receive two separate labeled jars of capsules on delivery.
Another option for your wellbeing postpartum and beyond is to have a portion of placenta made into a tincture that can be used as a potent “refresher” long after your capsules are gone. Placenta tincture is used for helping balance hormonal needs from postpartum to PMS to menopause. The placenta tincture is made by processing, immersing and letting steep part of the fresh placenta in grain alcohol for approximately 30 days. This remedy is stored in a glass jar in a cool dark environment, uninterrupted until three days before it is ready for the final process of “disrupting” the mixture once more before the final settling. The finished product is made by straining off the placenta solids, and then bottling. What remains is a very potent almost clear tincture of placenta in a dark glass bottle with a dropper. Suggested dosage is 10-40 drops in water two to three times a day. If kept properly in an airtight container in a cool dry place, your tincture should last indefinitely.
If you’d like a free blood print of your placenta, often referred to as “the Tree of Life” I will make one for you. You may also choose an original framed painting of your blood print (watercolor and ink). Although almost always possible, there are circumstances whereby a placenta print/painting are not possible. These include (but are not limited to) placentas that have been frozen, placed on an absorbent pad (a typical home birth practice) or sent to hospital Pathology. I often paint based on the interests of the mother/parents. Look deeply into the images of my placenta paintings. Who/what do you see?
Capsules, TCM or Raw: $250
1/2 & 1/2, TCM and Raw: Additional $50
Tincture $100 (takes approx. 4 weeks)
Placenta print painted and framed $350 (allow six weeks)
A travel fee of $50 (total) is added for round-trip distances over 20 miles (from my home to yours/hospital) and $150 for distances 50 miles or more round-trip. This fee covers tolls, fuel, time, etc. Each placenta processed requires at least two round trips, three if tincture is ordered as well.
Once you have provided some simple information for me, all you will need to do is take a cooler and some large Ziploc bags (for ice) with you if you are delivering away from home. Then, contact me when you are in labor and then again once your baby has been born. At that point we’ll make a plan regarding the timing of pick up.
Here are a couple of comments from recent placenta clients:
“I noticed a subtle calm/balance that I never felt after my first baby was born.” – Meg
“No more deep dark feelings…I am so relieved!” – Kate
“She recovered faster than I did!” – Jake
“…a gentle warming of both my body and my moods.” – Mel
“I wish she’d had these pills the first time around!” – Dave
The amazing placenta…made by you, for you!
As an EMT in a trauma center, I was trained in Bloodborne Pathogens & Infection Control and I follow the strict OSHA standards taught to me through my training with Placenta Benefits. In fact, in my preparation, cleaning and disinfecting I go beyond the standards set so as to provide extra protection.
